A Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is basically a computer that converts the incoming camera (analog) signal to digital, compresses it, and stores it on a hard drive using various compression techniques. Most popular compression techniques are JPEG, MPEG, and H.264. The DVR replaces the function of a multiplexer and a security VCR. Digital Video Recorders offer many features that were previously unavailable with analog only systems. Each camera input of a digital recorder can be programmed to record more or less frames per second depending on camera priority. Another very distinct advantage to digital recording is the ease of locating events. Just type in a time, date and camera number and you can view instant image. Other options available with digital recording include motion detection, remote viewing, on board media (CD, DVD, Flash Drive, USB ports) as well as remote control of pan tilt devices and more.
